Agro-biomass such as straw, miscanthus and reed canary grass can be used to produce cleaner fuels, heat and power in Europe.

At present the costs in producing energy from agro-biomass are high. Advanced technologies and economic analysis can help reduce costs, making agro-biomass a competitive energy resource in Europe.

Objectives and Activities

This Research Area aims to optimise the production, harvesting and end-use of agro-biomass in Europe to make it a competitive energy source.  The team is conducting research and development in three main areas: Conventional energy crops, particularly oil and rape, sugar and starch crops; Lignocellulosic feedstocks; and Structuring Tools.

The Team

The team is led by Ghislain Gosse at INRA who is supported by Jean-Claude Sourie, Benoit Gabrielle and Sylvie Recouy from INRA, Magdalena  Rogulska and Ewa Ganko from EC BREC, Gareth Griffiths from Aston, Pat McKeough and Arvo Leinonen from VTT, Helen Nilsson from IIIEE, Hannes Schwaiger from Joanneum, Elke van Thuijl from ECN and Andreas Hornung from FZK.
